Crafty sew and sew in Dorset

Welcome to my world of craft!

2018 Sewing plans

A year ago I set myself some sewing challenges and looking back I found them really helpful to direct my sewing plans and encourage me to try new Patterns.

I made a lot of clothes last year (32 items that I have photos of, plus a quilt, toys and dog coats!!) but I still don’t feel I have a complete wardrobe 🤦🏼‍♀️

This was my #makenine line up last year; a lovely collection of clothes but not coordinated or thought through. I failed on clothes for my husband….I now have two Patterns ready to make for him that I am confident the cut will work.

I made a swimsuit but not this one ☝️ and I didn’t make the coat or dress but lots if other dresses.

I did complete the sweatshirt as that was part of #sewmystyle of which I made most of the patterns.

I signed up to the Sew over it pdf club and bought some Patterns through that when in reality I didn’t have time to make them.

This year I have joined up to #sewmystyle and #2018rtwfast. I tried to give up shop bought clothes last year and did pretty well but failed at jeans, trousers and underwear so determined to master those this year.

My #makenine looks like this;

I just finished the Carolyn pyjamas today and the Nettie bodysuit last week so going well so far! I have a couple of these patterns already made so should be quick practical TNT makes plus a couple of new ones but crucially I own all the patterns already.

I also bought some folders to control how much I sew each month and plan out what supplies I need to get everything to coordinate and not just impulse Sew!!

I go back to university next month to start working towards my Masters so not sure how my sewing will fare against working full time, studying and family life….. then again I might need that time to keep sane!!

What are your plans for 2018?

Make Nine Update

I thought I should review how my make nine sewing is going now we are in April (already!!).
I have completed a few of my makes, with a change to some of the final patterns, but not got round to taking photos!

You can read my original blog post here

image

I have managed to make both of these sweatshirts here and here .

image

I have made the palazzo trousers but from the burda magazine instead of the GBSB book. These are being worn as I type but are yet to be photographed.
I have almost finished a swimsuit but not this version. I was asked to pattern test one from seamstress Erin which I can’t blog about until after its release.
I haven’t made the coat yet and debating about making the Kelly anorak for the summer instead, just building up the motivation to take on another coat.

image

I have now made three pairs of these trousers, which is a lot for me as I rarely find a TNT pattern as I get too excited to go onto the next project. I made a black velvet pair which I love; a pale pink stretch fabric which I’m not keen on as they don’t fit well with the level of stretch; and I finally finished my black jeans version which are my favourite. I altered the pattern to have a higher waistline and tapered the leg for a more fitted skinny jeans look. I also amended the rise to get a good fit, blog post coming soon once the sun comes out so I can get decent photos.

I haven’t made any of the selfless patterns yet (shame on me!) but vow to do these in the summer.
I also haven’t started on my Jackie o jacket or dress pattern and think they might be completed later in the year as I have too many other sewing plans first…..

Aggghh…….

I made myself a pair of jeans,  actually a hack of the ultimate trousers from sew over it in black denim so no front fly, but jeans none the less!
I added a zip guard, bias binding around the facing edge and altered the fit several times to get the fit I wanted….I was so happy!!  Until I tried them on one last time to decide on the length to hem them….. And the zip broke 😭

image

It had been a bit ‘sticky’ at times during fitting but this time it just jammed and then completely separated. I could cry, as I now have to unpick all my neat finishing and try and fit a new one.
Luckily we have dogs. How does that help you ask?!

image

Just look at that face….a quick cuddle with this beauty and the world is a better place again! Time for bed, ready to tackle that zip another day!

Capsule wardrobe and filling the gaps

I really want to plan my sewing better this year now I have covered most of the basics (except jeans).
I am completely drawn to fabric by print and design but this has left me with a mismatch wardrobe.

I think I got away with it during the summer as I could just wear dresses and sandles and not worry about matching tops etc.
I almost have a totally home sewn wardrobe now and only bought a handful of items last year as RTW.  Therefore I photographed by whole sewn wardrobe to identify gaps for me to focus on….. Get ready for a lot of photos!!

2017 Make nine

imageRochelle on instagram has set a challenge again this year to pick nine patterns that you want to make in 2017.

These are my nine:
1. Sew over it Ultimate trousers
2. Simple sew ‘Jackie o’ jacket
3. Butterick B6164 view a

imageThese are all to make me focus on the fit of my makes;

I have made one pair of ultimate trousers but want to improve my fit and play around with waist band ideas etc. I can see a few more of these in my wardrobe next year.

I have fabric en route from an online fabric shop in pink houndstooth to make the Jackie o jacket up, this could be my January entry to the monthly stitch!

The butterick pattern has been in my stash for a long time but not got round to it. I think because it looks like it needs and thought and effort to achieve a good fit and won’t be fine in a few hours. I like the green polka dot from the packet so might cost this idea.

4. Named Saunio cardigan and sew house seven toaster jumper.
imageI have included these together as they are part of the sew my style challenge during 2017. I have already made the toaster sweater #1 and love it, and have fabric for the cardigan.

5. New look 6769 coat
6. Great British sewing bee palazzo trousers
7. Butterick b6057 swimsuit
imageI know it has taken me a year to finish my duffle coat but I already have this new look vintage pattern for a spring/autumn coat in my sights. I love both the colours shown in the package and have seen since lovely Melton wool fabric on the sew over it website.

The palazzo trousers caught my eye after watching a vlog from sew over it when she reviewed the book and made this up in a bright but deep blue crepe. I have found a similar fabric in my local fabric shop and think these would be practical for work.

The swimsuit pattern has been in my stash for too long as well. I keep buying all in one costumes and struggle to find one that fits properly so finally conceded that I need to make myself one, just need to source all the fabric and notions.

8. Colette negroni shirt
9. GBSB t shirt
imageI have added these two as I need to get past my selfish sewing (and if I make hubby a few outfits it buys me some brownie points for more fabric shopping).
I have seen a few of the GBSB t shirt made up and its seems to offer a good fit so hopefully he will actually wear it if I make it up. Plus this would be an evening work so really rewarding.

The negroni shirt is yet to be in my possession but we both like the design and I just need to find somewhere in the UK I can buy it from. I am thinking of making it up in brushed cotton like in the photo.

What are your 2017 make nine?
